WELCOME PEACH GENOME!

Friday, 2 April 2010

The first draft annotated genome of peach (Prunus persica) has been completed!

Data and annotations were produced by the Istituto di Genomica Applicata and the Joint Genome Institute, members of the International Peach Genome Initiative (IPGI), as part of the DRUPOMICS project

The genome covers 227.3 Mbp and has been assembled from approximately 7.7 fold whole genome shotgun sequences generated by the accurate Sanger methodology. The almost 3 million sequences have been deposited at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).

Annotation analysis revealed a total of 27851 genes, 838 of which showing alternative splicing. The availability of this genome resource will allow for an improved markers assisted selection during breeding programs, for a better understanding of fruit development and ripening processes, and for a comparative analysis with other available sequenced genomes.
