The Ministry of Agriculture of the Italian Government has formally funded a research project on Peach genomics called Drupomics that involves the participation of Italy to the International Peach Genome Sequencing Project. This is an American-Italian project, on which scientists of both countries agreed since 2006 but had to wait for the project to be funded in both Countries. Italy came last but doesn't matter. Scientists are ready to recover the time lost. As it happened for the grape sequencing project, to which IGA participated as well, the project includes not only the sequencing of the genome and its assembly, but also a number of research activities that cope with the effort of making profitable for the peach industry the information derived from deciphering the sequence. IGA is the lab in charge for the sequencing and assembly activity in Italy and will cooperate with the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute of California, the American partner of the project.
